FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

General & Company

  • Q: Is Southern Cutters licensed and insured?

A: Yes. Southern Cutters LLC holds Louisiana Horticulturist License #3176, is fully insured, and carries an

A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. We've served Greater New Orleans since 2015.

  • Q: What areas do you serve?

A: We serve the Greater New Orleans area including Metairie, New Orleans, Kenner, River Ridge,

Harahan, and the Northshore (Mandeville, Covington, and surrounding communities). If you're nearby

but don't see your city listed, call us at (504) 344-3317 — we may still be able to help.

  • Q: Do you offer free estimates?

A: Yes. Every estimate starts with a free, no-commitment property consultation. We walk the property,

discuss your goals, and provide a written proposal — usually within 48 hours.

  • Q: What types of properties do you service?

A: We handle residential homes, commercial properties, HOA communities, apartment complexes, and

municipal/institutional grounds. Our crews are equipped for everything from a single-family lawn to

    multi-acre commercial campuses.

  • Q: Why does hiring a licensed horticulturist matter?

A: Louisiana requires a horticulturist license for landscape work involving plant health, fertilization, and

installation. A licensed provider has passed state testing on plant science, pest management, and safe

chemical application — which protects your property and your investment. Many unlicensed operators

offer cheaper prices but can't legally or safely perform this work.

Lawn Care & Maintenance

  • Q: How often should my lawn be mowed in South Louisiana?

A: During peak growing season (roughly April through October), most St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns

need weekly mowing. In cooler months, every two to three weeks is usually enough. We adjust

frequency by season so you're never paying for cuts your lawn doesn't need.

  • Q: What's included in your regular maintenance service?

A: Standard maintenance includes mowing, edging along all hard surfaces, string trimming, and blowing

off driveways, walkways, and patios. Add-on services include fertilization, weed control, shrub trimming,

    mulching, and seasonal color installation.

  • Q: Weekly vs. biweekly service — which do I need?

A: In a Louisiana summer, biweekly mowing usually means cutting off too much blade at once, which

stresses the grass and leaves clumps. We recommend weekly service April–October and reduced

frequency in winter. We'll give you an honest recommendation based on your turf type and irrigation.

  • Q: Do I need to sign a long-term contract?

A: Residential maintenance is available with flexible terms. Commercial and HOA properties are typically

serviced under an annual agreement, which allows us to schedule crews consistently and price the full

    year of work accurately.

Commercial & HOA

  • Q: How is commercial grounds management priced?

A: Commercial pricing depends on acreage, turf and bed square footage, service frequency, and scope

(mowing only vs. full grounds management with fertilization, irrigation, and seasonal color). After a site

walk, we provide a detailed annual proposal with a fixed monthly rate — no surprise invoices.

  • Q: Can you handle HOA common areas and entrances?

A: Yes. HOA work is one of our core services. We maintain entrances, boulevards, common greenspaces,

retention areas, and amenity centers, and we communicate directly with boards and property managers

    with regular service reports.

  • Q: Are you set up to work with property management companies?

A: Yes. We carry the insurance coverage property managers require, provide certificates of insurance on

request, and can invoice per-property or consolidated. References from current commercial clients are

    available.

  • Q: What happens if service is missed due to weather?

A: Rain delays are rescheduled within the same week whenever conditions allow. For commercial

contracts, our agreements spell out make-up service terms so expectations are clear.

Landscaping & Irrigation

  • Q: What's the best time of year to install new landscaping in New Orleans?

A: Fall through early spring is ideal for most trees and shrubs in our climate — roots establish before

summer heat arrives. Seasonal color and many perennials can be installed year-round with proper

irrigation. We'll design an installation schedule around plant selection.

  • Q: What plants hold up best in our climate?

A: We favor proven Gulf South performers: azaleas, camellias, gardenias, Indian hawthorn, sweet olive,

crape myrtles, and heat-tolerant natives. Plant selection also depends on your sun exposure, drainage,

and maintenance preferences — that's part of our design consultation.

  • Q: Can you fix drainage or standing water problems?

A: Yes. South Louisiana yards commonly struggle with poor drainage. We install French drains, catch

basins, regrading, and drainage-conscious bed design to move water away from structures and turf.

  • Q: Do you install and repair irrigation systems?

A: Yes. We design and install new irrigation systems and repair existing ones — broken heads, valve

issues, controller programming, and coverage adjustments. Proper irrigation is the single biggest factor

in keeping Louisiana turf healthy through summer.

Storm Recovery

  • Q: Do you provide storm cleanup after hurricanes and severe weather?

A: Yes. We provide storm recovery services including debris removal, downed limb and tree cleanup,

and property restoration. Existing maintenance clients receive priority scheduling after major weather

    events.

  • Q: How can I prepare my property before hurricane season?

A: Pre-season preparation includes pruning weak or overextended limbs, removing dead trees and

branches, securing or thinning top-heavy plantings, and clearing drainage paths. We offer pre-season

property assessments each spring — the best storm damage is the kind that never happens.
